4. Custom gauges!
Remember offroad driving is much more intense than usual driving, you need to monitor every aspect of engine and exhaust, battery and more stuff if its possible, to keep your car and you safe!


Oil temp gauge - good if you stock Coolant temp gouge can be failure or thermostat catch fail. If engine its going to hot you can observe with this.

Oil pressure gauge - very important, no oil pressure can blow you engine up! Suitable for every car!

Exhaust temp gauge - very important gauge, it showing real temperature of engine, you don't need to wait until coolant or oil be more cooler that exhaust gas, this should be important if you are equipped with turbo.

Air pressure gauge - good to monitor if your turbo is in good condition and everything works well this is a must in turbo engine.

Old Toyota Hilux - worth buying?

Hello my Readers! I was recently thinking about buying older Toyota Hilux, let's say from about 1982 to 1989. They are fourth and fifth generation.

Equipped  with engines from 1.6 to 3.0 V6 diesel and petrol engines with turbos. So many options were available.

But right now not many people have to sell car like this.
Cool thing about those cars, they are pretty simple, you can tune it very nice. From custom shocks to bi turbo engines. But keep life of car in mind.
Spare parts depends on country where you live. Also in many countries you can have big discount on taxes if car is old and its called veteran car or similar to this.

Rust shouldn't be a problem. In those old cars you can just cut out rust pieces and weld new ones, spare parts or from another car that can suit. My friend do it all the time in chevys.

If you are looking for some hobby car that you can drive it for fun I think its a good choice!

To build a good offroad machine, doesn't matter if it will be high speed trophy truck or just trail truck, you will need basics:
1. Higher suspnession, it depends on your wallet thickness ;) You can use spacers for suspenssion which I don't recommend. Or just buy longer springs and leafs, also It always better to buy longer shock absorbers:

2. You can lift your body from frame for some mm. This one is easy and not so expensive. You can earn more space for bigger wheels and have more clearence on bottom.
3. Spare wheel carrier, Remember to always have minimum 1 spare wheel for you car when offroading.
You can put the wheel on storage area or buy extra carrier, just take a look on trophy trucks they always have 4 spare wheels because time is money for them!

Toyota Hilux 3.0 D-4D PowerBoost

As I said before, Now it's time for explain something about newest Hilux with engine 3.0 D-4D with PowerBoost that's have 201HP instead of 171HP. New engine is having 30HP and 77Nm more than old one in Manual Transmission. In automatic transmission will be like this: 30HP and 75 Nm.

 But If you already know that, This is the same engine like before, but manufacturer is giving you module that you are buying for lot of money, and the cool thing is you still have warranty for over 3 years!
So you can be happy with powerful pickup on warranty.

Toyota Hilux Unstoppable!

Toyota Hilux is produced from 1968! Yes this is a lot of time, there was 7 generetions of those vehicles.

From small gasoline engines to the big diesels. Toyota are maded new Enginge 3.0 Diesel with power boost up to 201 Horsepower! But this will be in another Post. In my country You can still buy used Hilux from over 86 year in good condition, it means those cars are very tough. 

So If you are thinking to buy Hilux, just don't think to much and buy one!

Hilux Arctic Truck

Hilux are the most popular arctic trucks ever made. It's easy to tune up and the toyota brand are very heavy duty in the meaning good quality.
Arctic trucks have very popular tire size in 35" inches common, then 38" and hardcore 44".
They lifting car about 40mm.

You can see in one of Topgear programs when they drive AT HILUX. This car looks like this and have freaking toilet on the back:

Adding Differential lock

Brand new Hilux wasn't equipped with differential lock. We need to put some new things and we gonna have awesome locks :)

When you buy universal locks you can put it by yourself. This time we gonna put lock in front and rear differential.

This was Toyota Land Cruiser HDJ 80, but for sure is the same with: Hilux, 4Runner czy FJ Cruiser. nissan patrol Suzuki Samurai and another pickups has the same build differential.

After unpacking our parts we gonna need drill 11,4mm and 1 inch screw tap.. Then I read a service bulletin of Toyota - it turned out that to set wheel alignment on bridges, I'll need a dial gauge. I added it to the list of blue thread and adhesive Teflon tape.

Also widely known that the lock assembly, replace the bearings with new - I bought a set of bearings, seals, washers and gaskets.

The second phase is the removal of the heads and cleaning bridges. Karcher invented bridges, especially in front of a lot of accumulated sludge, probably grease joints. On the photos you can see the end result - now you can eat them.

The next step is the installation - now I had to earn some extra special keys for tightening regulatory clearance between the plate and attack. Quick visit to a turner, welder, drill and special keys made​​.

Puncture bridge and tapered screw thread hole of the pressure output - On the photos you can see.

Editing basket satellites and adjusting backlash - here you need to involve the dial gauge and do it the hard to understand what the author was referring to the user. Adjusting the clearance is essential for the proper functioning of the differential - if someone does not feel able to do it yourself, you may want to hire a experienced mechanic.

At the end of the installation and connection of the compressor - pure pleasure. Kit includes pre-harnesses and pressure hoses.

No, tests, first cleaning - lock works amazingly!

After assembling the bridge and connect the compressor everything works fine!

Chip mod Hilux 3.0 CRD

I founded a chip mod that suits to every Hilux from 2012 onwards with 3.0L diesel engine.

It's increasing torque from 343Nm to 412Nm!!

and the horse power:

171HP to 200HP!!!

++plus economy improvements, and reduced turbo lag.

Expected outcomes very depending on how you set it, to suit your individual driving needs.

How it works:

 Directly influencing injector pressure which modifies the pulse width and cycle duration - German engineered technology speaks to the ECU with ACTIVE software management actively adjusting air fuel ratio based on engine load & RPM through the regulation of fuel pressure in the common rail fuel injection system. Fuel rail pressures modified by the module NEVER exceed the factory specifications of the motor, simply they increase the pressure or decrease the pressure based on what you are doing with the vehicle at the time. The engine diagnostic circuit would produce a check engine light if there was ever any running conditions that were outside of the manufactures specifications. Simply, the module will never harm your motor.

·                  Increasing airflow to the engine - turbo charger boost pressure increases earlier in the rpm range in response to the increased fuelling, this increase in airflow combined with improved fuelling allows much more efficient running conditions for the motor allowing increased driveability and performance from your vehicle.

·                  A vehicle producing more power at lower rpm saves fuel. Fuel efficiency is the bi-product of an engine that has increased torque at lower rpm when driven accordingly.

You will see some modules connect up to the individual injectors, this system is just an unnecessary and complicated method of achieving exactly what our Diesel Power Modules do by piggybacking the fuel rail plug, just making installation time longer and messier.

But unfortunately it's not cheap mod- it cost from 300 Euro to 1200 Euro depends on manufacturer and model of car.

6 of Hilux started Dakar Rally. Those cars are pure madness. 5 litres V8 gasoline engines!!

They have like 480HP!! This is why they fly on rally:

 They added some of safety pipes and deleted useless parts.

Hilux Engines

Toyota made few options with engines, in time they just modified those old ones.
I must say that every engine has safe power tolerance, it means those engines are like to be tuned and get more hp. Toyota brand, after relasing they Hiluxes, made a chipr that automaticly tuned engines just by clicking some sockets (15min of work) and adding more power and torque. It was commercial move, because other pickups has more much power than hilux. I think is great for us now. You can buy a used Hilux with not that bad engine.
The most popular engines are from 2005 to now:

• R4 2,0 l VVT-i DOHC 136 KM (RPA)
• R4 2,5 l (2494 cm³) D-4D 2KD-FTV TD DOHC, 120 KM (South america, Asia, Europ, RPA)
• R4 2,7 l (2694 cm³) VVT-i 2TR-FE DOHC, 164 KM (Australia, RPA)
• R4 3,0 l (2982 cm³) D-4D 1KD-FTV TD DOHC, 163 KM (South America, Asia, Europ, RPA)

And one of gasoline engine but only made for Australia and RPA:

• V6 4,0 l (3956 cm³) VVT-i 1GR-FE DOHC, 238 KM - 245 KM (Australia, RPA)

The one of best engines are 3.0 diesel and 2.5 D-4D with 144HP just for that ones.

Drivetrain in Hilux is very simple but simplicity is the best!!

Maybe you don't have much of options in drive but those options are enough:

You have H4 is for high speed slippery road 4x4 drive. 50%-50%

L4 is low speed offroad 4x4 drive.50%-50%

H2 is 4x2 only rear wheels are driving, is good for economy on highway or just for drift :)100%-0%

In every version there is manual 5 speed gearbox.
Some times (america or rpa) you can find automatic transmission 4 or 5 speed.

Remember to use professional parts, when you want to cheaply lift your car, please don't do that!! THIS IS YOUR SAFETY!! and other people!!. Just safe more money or borrow from the bank to buy best parts!.

Anyway look at this and don't mount parts like this if is really necessary. Those parts lifting your car in about 20mm 1 Inch 1" or little more but then your wheel geometry sucks:

When you buy professional kit, you need to change also shocks, springs, mountings. When you buy super lift kit you gonna get new frame for that - but this is really awesome, this is gonna lift your car about 3 to 4 inches. (3" - 4" , 30-70 mm). And you gonna get safe, high, and good driving car.
